The Canada Graduate Research Scholarship – Doctoral (CGRS-D) program is a highly competitive, fully funded opportunity provided by the Government of Canada. Aimed at developing the next generation of top-tier researchers and innovators, this harmonized talent framework is co-administered by Canada’s three major federal research granting bodies (collectively known as the Tri-Agencies):

Scholarship Duration
- Annual Funding: CAD $40,000 per year

Important Note: Following federal budget updates, the CGRS-D streamlined and officially replaced the old CGS-D and the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship frameworks. Funding has been standardized to $40,000/year, and the application pool expanded by 1,200 net new doctoral awards across the agencies.
Eligibility Criteria
To successfully apply for the 2026/2027 cycle, candidates must meet strict academic, enrollment, and duration guidelines:
- Citizenship: Open to Canadian citizens, permanent residents, protected persons, and international students. Under the modernized framework, competitive international doctoral scholars are eligible to receive up to 15% of the allocated awards.
- Program Type: Must be enrolled in or applying to a full-time, research-oriented doctoral program (which must include a substantial, expert-reviewed research project or thesis component).
- Time in Program: As of December 31 of the application year, you must have completed no more than 36 months of full-time equivalent doctoral study.
- Prior Funding Limits: You cannot have previously received a doctoral-level scholarship from CIHR, NSERC, or SSHRC (including the archived Vanier scholarship). You may apply a maximum of three times to the CGRS-D program.

The Application Procedure
Applying is a two-tiered process depending on whether you are currently registered at a Canadian university or applying as an independent candidate.
1.Select the Appropriate Agency:Field Alignment.
Assess which federal agency aligns perfectly with your research domain. Health-related studies go to CIHR, natural sciences and engineering to NSERC, and humanities or social sciences to SSHRC.
2.Determine Your Application Route:
If you are currently enrolled at a Canadian university holding an institutional award quota, you must apply through your institution. If you are not registered at a quota-holding university, you will select the option to apply directly to the specific agency.
3.Complete the Online Portal File:Portals Close Oct 17, 2026.
Register and fill out the designated portal (ResearchNet for CIHR, NSERC Online System, or the SSHRC portal). You must upload a targeted research proposal, a standardized Canadian Common CV (CCV), up-to-date official transcripts, and two formal referee assessments.
4.Observe Strict Timelines:Institutional Deadlines Vary.
If applying through a university, comply with your school’s internal institutional deadline (frequently scheduled in September 2026). The ultimate direct agency submission deadline closes firmly on October 17, 2026, at 8:00 PM ET.
Final Review and Results Timeline
Following the initial institutional review and national merit review filtering, the official funding selections will be formally announced to all global applicants on April 30, 2027. Awardees can choose to activate their funding tenures on May 1, 2027, September 1, 2027, or January 1, 2028.
