Earning a PhD takes a lot of perseverance, and finding funding for in-depth research is often tough. Most grants require you to focus on just one country. If you want to study issues across borders or compare how policies affect different communities, you usually have to pay for that extra work yourself.
While targeted practical programs like the OctoPrep Cohort 6 Tech Scholarship focus on rapid, job-ready skills to help developers transition directly into the global workforce, the 2026 Routledge/Round Table Commonwealth Studentship Awards offer a unique path for humanities and social science researchers. Financed by The Round Table journal and its publisher, Routledge, alongside the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU), this program provides two £5,500 research grants specifically built to add an international, cross-border dimension to your doctoral work.
You do not need to change your whole PhD topic for this program. Instead, the grant helps you add a broader, comparative view to your current research.
What Does the £5,500 Funding Cover?
This award does not cover tuition. Instead, it is a flexible research grant given in two parts to support your fieldwork, data collection, and publishing.
- Upfront Research Capital: You get £4,000 right away when you win the award. This money can be used for travel, data collection in other countries, or access to archives.
- Publishing Bonus: You receive the remaining £1,500 after you finish your academic portfolio, which includes a peer-reviewed article and a digital feature.
The Cross-Border Rule: What Kind of Research Qualifies?
The panel will not consider applications in pure sciences or medicine. They are only looking for projects in the humanities and social sciences, such as politics, international relations, development studies, law, history, or geography.
To be eligible, your proposal must meet at least one of these criteria:
- System-Wide Relevance: Your research must directly examine the Commonwealth as a whole or look at a specific Commonwealth-wide organization.
- Comparative Study: Your project must actively compare a specific issue across at least two member countries (for example, environmental policy enforcement in South Africa and Kenya).
- Transnational Impact: The findings of your study must be highly relevant to more than one Commonwealth nation.
The International Mentorship Advantage
A distinctive aspect of this studentship is the required cross-border mentorship. You must find and work with a mentor at a university in a Commonwealth country other than your own. This helps you build real international connections in your academic network.
Your mentor will do more than just approve your paperwork. They will challenge your ideas, meet with you online during the year, and help you understand international publishing trends. To thank them for their time and expertise, the program gives your mentor a separate £500 honorarium at the end of the cycle.
Strict Eligibility & Submission Framework
The program gives out two grants each year, based on where you are currently studying:
- Seat 1: Open to any registered PhD student currently enrolled at a university in the United Kingdom (you do not need to be a UK citizen).
- Seat 2: Open to registered PhD students enrolled at any ACU member university across other Commonwealth nations, as well as Chevening and Commonwealth Scholarship alumni studying anywhere outside the UK.
Post-Award Requirements
If you are selected, you have 12 months to complete two main pieces of work based on your funded research:
- You must write an academic research article of 4,000 to 6,000 words for possible publication in The Round Table journal.
- You also need to create an audio podcast that explains your research findings for the journal’s global digital audience.
